Kapelebyong bids for UPDF brigade
Kapelebyong district has tendered a proposal of land to Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) for establishment of army brigade in Amugit Village, Okoboi Parish in Kapelebyong Sub County.
The proposal fetched a visit of the site by UPDF led by deputy commander of the Third Division, Brigadier General Karate Wilberforce Sserunkuma, on July 16, 2024.
The UPDF delegation was led to the proposed land by the district leadership headed by the District Chairperson, Francis Akorikin, in the company of the District Security Committee, led by the Resident District Commissioner, Tom Olinga Otukol and Kapelebyong Sub County Political leadership.
In his submission to the UPDF leadership, Akorikin said the district is committed to support the army in the process of establishment of the brigade.
According to him, a community meeting to finalise all the necessary documentation will be held on July 18, 2024, for submission to the UPDF.
“This land is totally free. The Karamojong warriors jungle in these bushes but establishing a brigade in this place will mark an end to cattle rustling which has posed a serious economic loss to our people,” Akorikin said.
He stressed that the land in total is over 200 acres of land.
The tour on the land under scorching sun met ululations from the community residents, who described the establishment of the brigade in Kapelebyong as a lasting solution for the long insecurity question in the area.
Richard Okiru, the district speaker urged the community to desist from frustrating the efforts of brigade establishment in the district.
He said the facilities which the brigade comes with will be of great help to much impoverished communities.
“We offered this land for the establishment of an army brigade 10 years ago. We are greatly humbled by the consideration of UPDF to keep our hopes alive,” Okiru said.
